What is Hau Dong?

"Hau Dong", also known as "Len Dong", is a spiritual ritual in the Vietnamese Mother Goddess worship of the Three Palaces and Four Palaces, where a Thanh Dong (a male/female medium) temporarily possesses the spirit of a deity to perform actions such as blessing, healing, suppressing evil spirits, and communicating with the gods. This is a form of folk performance combining Chau Van singing, music and dance with the meaning of connecting people with the world of gods, expressing the tradition of patriotism. This practice of Mother Goddess Belief has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

HauDongft.Art Founder

Ngoc Bao Anh Le is the founder of HauDongft.Art, a project dedicated to exploring and preserving Hau Dong, the ritual of spirit mediumship in Vietnam, as a subject of cultural research. Her work approaches this tradition not only as a matter of belief, but as a multifaceted practice rich in art, performance, and psychology.

With a background that combines artistic practice and scientific inquiry, she positions herself as a cultural bridge. She seeks to document and interpret Hau Dong in ways that highlight its aesthetic value, symbolic language, and psychological depth, while remaining respectful and objective.

Through HauDongft.Art, she employs diverse tools, from visual arts to psychological frameworks, to preserve and present this ritual for both Vietnamese communities and international audiences. Her mission is to create an accessible platform where Hau Dong can be understood in its full complexity: as a vibrant cultural heritage, a living art form, and a window into human creativity and expression.

The artist preserves the worn texture, cracks, and tiny time-marked holes of the vintage tray, allowing tradition itself to speak through decay. Once a humble object […]
